Maintaining employee motivation during the summer period can be challenging due to the lure of sunshine, holidays and outdoor activities. In fact, it’s been reported that employee motivation can drop by as much as 20% during the summer period. Whilst it’s normal for motivation to decline a little, HR teams know the importance of keeping motivation, and as a result, productivity high, but they face a challenging task in doing so. However, the success of a company depends on it.

Here are several strategies to keep employees motivated and engaged:

Flexible work options

If you don’t already then consider offering flexible working hours so employees can adjust their start and finish times to suit their personal needs and increased family commitments due to school holidays. Over the summer period some workers may opt to start, and finish work earlier to maximise daylight hours such as starting at 7.30am and leaving at 3.30pm. Alternatively, offering the option to work from home or other locations can provide a good compromise and allows employees to continue their work in a way that promotes a work-life balance.

Summer incentives

Don’t forget to acknowledge and reward employees for their hard work and achievements regularly, particularly over the summer when employees may be taking on additional workloads to cover for colleagues on annual leave.

Engaging work environment

Hold meetings outdoors to provide a refreshing change from the office environment if you have the outdoor space to accommodate this or consider investing in some picnic benches as an extension of the staff room for lunch breaks.

Professional development

The summer period can be a quieter time for some businesses and can therefore be a good time to work on employee professional development opportunities such as workshops and online courses. Discuss career goals and create development plans, showing employees that their growth is a priority.

Set clear expectations

Clearly communicate your expectations when it comes to company goals and performance expectations with a roadmap for priorities and deadlines to help employees stay focused during the summer months, especially when employees are taking time out of office for annual leave.

Team building activities

The summer is a great opportunity to get the team together for team building activities such as  outings, sports events, or a company barbecue. Hosting regular social events is a good way to motivate employees and helps different departments get to know each other and can improve collaboration between departments.

Create a Positive Work Culture

Foster an environment where employees feel comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns and ensure managers are supportive and approachable, providing guidance and feedback.

Employee Autonomy

Give employees more control over their projects and how they complete their work and show trust in employees by delegating meaningful responsibilities and recognizing their contributions.

Final thoughts…

It can be a challenging task to maintain employee morale and productivity throughout the summer months, but it is an important task for HR teams. Implementing some of the strategies outlined in this blog post, businesses can help ensure employees remain motivated, productive, and satisfied during the summer period. Steps such as a simple thank you or acknowledgement can go a long way, but implementing flexible working arrangements, professional development opportunities and team building activities are all straight forward and can increase moral significantly.
