Supercharging reporting with Power BI

Stuart Anderson, Senior Director and General Manager of Pegasus Software, looks at how Opera 3 SE’s Data Connector application is driving superior reporting and performance within the Office of the CFO and beyond.

A new era for finance

There’s no question that we’re in the throes of a new era for finance, with CFOs transitioning from record keepers to value creators. Once the guardians of the spreadsheet, modern finance departments are fast becoming drivers and innovators of a new intelligence-led way of working. A role which has expanded in recent years way beyond numbers, in 2025 CFOs are focused on gathering insights from which to guide business decisions and shape strategy. At the centre of this shift are automation and reporting.

Making this transition, however, is not without its challenges, and requires new tools to deliver.

72% of CFOs say reporting is a “critical priority”

In addition to automated processes from which to drive efficiency and consistency across the department, access to high quality, real-time reports has become a prerequisite of best practice. In fact, a recent Gartner survey highlighted that 72% of CFOs rank reporting as a critical priority in 2025.

Transformative insights

Through deploying an integrated platform such as Opera 3 SE for financials, finance departments can benefit from streamlined, automated processes for wider visibility and more comprehensive insights. And through leveraging Opera 3 SE’s Data Connectors application to export data to Microsoft Power BI, these insights can be transformative.

Because they export all relevant data and insights to Power BI, it produces the ultimate reports, empowering financial directors, business owners, production managers and department heads to make the best decisions based on the latest, most accurate and contextualised insights.

Focused access to the right data

Crucially Power BI allows you to design and customise reports precisely to your specifications and requirements. This extends to setting alerts for, say, when you exceed a credit limit, or as stock levels are reached. The reports are both intuitive, flexible and informative to allow the right parameters and dimensions for focused access to the right data.

Because they can be tailored and presented in whatever way is needed for a specific job function, the reports can highlight any issues or anomalies so that they can be investigated, and rectified before they become problems. This ability to take corrective measures in the moment not only mitigates risk but facilitates much greater control and ability to stem potential losses, allowing businesses to stay on top of all areas of operations.

Embracing change

Embracing the shift taking place in the Office of the CFO currently and embarking upon digital transformation initiatives is paramount for professionals in 2025. But attempting this in the absence of the right tools is likely to result in frustrations, errors and ultimately a loss of both good people and profits.

In a department where intelligence and data-driven decision-making represent the lifeblood, having the right digital capabilities to automate, extract and integrate for superior reporting is fundamental.

A converged approach for best practice

Opera 3 SE and Power BI, integrated via our new Data Connector application, allow this high-level reporting, affording modern CFOs the capability to quickly analyse and leverage data in a way that expedites decision-making and informs strategy in a dynamic environment.
